Teaching the Alphabet

Teaching the alphabet can be a challenging tasks but with a few ideas you can make it into a fun learning experience. Here are a few tips on teaching the alphabet to kids.

Small Group Activities

Work on two letters a week. Start with uppercase letters and then teach the lowercase ones.

Make flash cards with one letter per card. Using two letters at a time quiz your child on the two letters until they get the letters right a few times. Do this everyday for about 5 minutes until all the letters are learned.

Create a chart of letters. Make up your own movements for each letter and do the movement as you say the letter and then the letter sound and go down the chart.

Draw letters in the sand.

Trace letters on flashcards using a bottle of glue. When the glue dries have your kids trace along the glue with their fingers.

Have your kids first trace letters, then write them on their own.
