Self Portraits Using Oil Pastels
Introduction
Oil pastels are inexpensive and colorful. They are a great choice for classroom projects or at home. Easy to use and bright and vivid, oil Pastels can be found in your local art store. You can blend these pastels together nicely with your fingers or the use the pastel itself to blend the colors.
Materials
- Oil Pastels
- White Construction Paper 9x12 inches
- Large sheets of manila construction paper 12/18 inches (folded in half to make folders)
Instructions
For this project, you will be making a self portrait. Drawing on the white construction paper, demonstrate face shape, hair, eyes and nose for the kids. Then let them draw.
Most kids will be happy to see an example first. Use lots of color. Experiment by using colors you normally wouldn't see in nature. Blend blue, green and purple into hair. Blend green into skin. Make it abstract. Have fun!
When you are done have the kids put their drawings in the manila folders so the pastel doesn't get everywhere.
